The Reach One, Teach One Literacy Program offers literacy education, general tutoring services, study skills, and homework assistance.
Excellence by Design Education Center’s (EDEC) literacy program helps students in all four literacy skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing which is needed to help them succeed. Students gain confidence as they build competence in communication and critical thinking.
- Starting in early elementary grades by engaging in speaking, listening, and writing activities to build fundamental reading skills.
- Students in upper elementary grades utilize their literacy skills to solve math problems, conduct science projects, and investigate social sciences.
In our innovative approach, we use researched-based activities that increase student motivation to learn language-based subjects. Our curriculum is T.E.K.S. & E.L.P.s based using the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills as our curriculum model.
The tutoring program provides:
- Small group tutoring to students who need assistance in reading, writing, and math to achieve grade level success
- Assists students with homework
- Assists students with study skills
- Ability to maintain/enhance academic skills.
Tutors provide each student with the individualized academic attention and assistance needed for academic success on the standardized test (STARR) required by the state. The tutoring sessions use an academically focused curriculum and lesson guide to help them prepare to deliver instruction that will help the student improve reading, math, and writing skills.
In addition, all mentors must pass a criminal background check, have experience working with youth, and attend all mentor training and workshops. Tutors receive continuous training throughout the year and report monthly on the students’ progress.
S.T.A.A.R. Reading & Math Test Prep
The Reach One, Teach One S.T.A.A.R. Reading and Math Tutoring Program provides supplementary educational services (T.E.K.S. based). Small group and one-on-one instruction are available for students who have not met the state standards for grade promotion by not pass the S.T.A.A.R. Reading, writing, or math assessment. We also provide homework assistance.
Our Reach One, Teach One Approach
Our program objective is to foster student growth and overall success.
- We conduct assessments and review individual student data to assess the students’ performance levels based on Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills. The goal is to prepare students to pass exams and state assessments by helping them gain a fundamental understanding of the subject area and obtain mastery of essential skills.
- We focus our lessons by tailoring the lesson plan to the specific needs of the student’s performance data. Students are active participants in the development and execution of the learning plan. Students can also email tutors between sessions to ask questions or to get assistance.
- Parents receive feedback on their child’s progress, both written and through parental meetings.
- EDEC keeps records of students’ progress, and parents receive a monthly progress report.
- Parental involvement is crucial; therefore, we encourage our parents, students, and staff to make regular contact. We believe in the “Whole Village” approach.
Our teachers who provide tutoring have extensive reading, writing, and math skills. All tutors are required to attend orientation and ongoing professional development/training.
